creaking since wheel alignment
« on: June 15, 2014, 04:06:22 pm »
Hi,

Been having multiple problems since fitting H&R lowering springs to my edition 30 and was looking to the board to help.

A mate fitted the springs for me and I drove the car around for a 100 or so miles to get it to settle, everything seemed fine (well apart from the bone shattering ride) and no noises. Then took my car to have the alignment done, ever since they have corrected it i get a creaking at low speed maneuvering turning the wheel both ways.

I've taken the car to my local specialist (Vas works poole) and they seem to be stumped, they think the noise is coming from the steering coll-om and that it could be from being over stressed?

They have said the sub frame has been moved out to the absolute maximum by the people that have done the wheel alignment, I will post a picture of the before and after alignment in a bit...

They also said the front springs the springs are upside down? I couldn't see this making a difference personally but whats other peoples opinions.

The cars only done 17 000 miles so I can't imagine the noise is because of excess ware :S

Also has anyone else ran h and r springs with standard shocks? the ride to me is shocking, I would go to say it feels 40% stiffer than standard. Not sure weather to cut my losses and put the standard springs back on or throw more money at it and fit B8/fsd dampeners.

All my mods seem to be going wrong at the moment :( loosing faith!

Dan

Sounds like the top mounts/bearings to me.

I run H&R springs without issue.

Maybe take it to someone to check the installation.

Do you think the top mounts would go under so little millage though? Think the guys at VAS said they looked ok.

Out of interest do you know if there are different variants of h&r springs for the mk5 gti? I have a 5 door dsg so I guess the heavy beast...

Might be worth getting it up on a ramp and checking that the subframe bolts and steering rack bolts are done up correctly. My steering started clicking/creaking and the bolts all needed tightening.

My subframe is also as far over as it can go so the camber is within spec after having the alignment done.

I have bilstein b8s with the h&r -50mm springs fitted on my vRS and I had a similar problem. I was getting a creaking/ grinding noise when trying to steer. It turned out to be a loose bolt on the subframe, we had it back up on the ramps and when the tech was going over checking the bolts, one creaked and gave another full turn the noise on the steering stopped instantly.
